Always Keep Your Word

Always Keep Your Word

Being a REAL man is about keeping your word.  Whatever it is, if you say you are going to do something, then follow through and do it.  That’s part of what being responsible is about. A real man keeps his word; it’s that simple.

Keep Your Word, and Keep Your Integrity

Whenever you give your word to someone, you have to follow through on it.  You have to keep your word, because that’s the right thing to do.  Because that’s the respectable thing to do.

Whenever you make a promise, you have to deliver on it.  When you give your word that you are going to do something, you had better do it.  Otherwise, don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep, and don’t commit yourself to things that you aren’t willing to follow through on, regardless of what might possibly happen in the future.

No one ever forces you to give your word. So, if you do indeed decide to give it—and if you do decide to make a promise—then you had better follow through on it.

When you give your word, you have to keep it.  Whether you want to or not is irrelevant. You do what’s right, simply because it’s right.  And keeping your word, no matter how difficult or unpleasant (or costly) it may turn out to be, is the right thing to do.

Always keep your word, in spite of the fact that it may be hard to do.  Always keep your word, in spite of the fact that it may cost you (either in terms of popularity, time, or in this case money… lots of money.)  Always keep your word, in spite of the fact that it may be difficult for you to do so, and regardless of whether or not you want to.  Always keep your word, because it is the right thing to do… because it is the honorable thing to do.

“Once you've given your word, stick to it.”

~ John Wareham

Any man can give his word.

It takes a REAL man to keep it.

If you give your word to another, then stay true to it.

If you give your promise to someone, then hold tightly to it.

If you say you are going to do something, then follow through and do it.

If you say that you are reliable, then go ahead and prove it.

“Breaking of your word is a folly, a dishonor, and a crime.  It is a folly, because no one will trust you afterwards; and it is both a dishonor and a crime, truth being the first duty of religion and morality; and whoever has not truth, cannot be supposed to have any one good quality.”

~ Lord Philip Stanhope Chesterfield

Keep Your Word, Even If It Costs You … Especially If It Costs You

There are times when keeping your word may cost you personally.  Doing the right thing and staying true to your word may cost you in terms of your popularity.  It may cost you in terms of your time or energy.  It may cost you in terms of your convenience.  It may even cost you in terms of your money.  However, doing the right thing and keeping your word will save you something far more valuable than any of the above things.  While it may cost you in terms of financial wealth or material possessions, keeping your word will save you perhaps the most valuable possession that you have: your integrity.

While you may be losing your popularity, status, time, or even money

by keeping your word… you will be saving a few things of far greater value. Namely among them are: your Integrity, your Dignity, your Trustworthiness, your Respectability, the Respect of Others, and your own Self-Respect as well.

In addition to all of these “savings,” you also will be able to hold onto your Good Name, your Dependable Reputation (also known as that priceless “You-Can-Count-On-Me” factor); and, perhaps most important of all, you will be able to maintain your Honor.

Sure keeping your word may cost you in some way.  But, when you look at what you will be saving by following through on your commitment, it really adds up to a whole lot more than what mere money can buy.  That is because, ultimately, when you get right to the heart of the matter, you realize that money is tied merely to your bank account. Your word, however, is tied to something much more important than just your “bottom line.”  It’s tied to your Integrity.

“You have to live by your principles,

even if it costs you   Especially if it costs you.”

~ Bo Schembechler

Keep Your Word, & Don’t Count The Cost

Guard your dignity and protect your integrity.

No matter what happens, and no matter what you may lose in the process:

Make sure that you always hold onto your integrity.

Keeping your word might cost you.

But, the one thing you can’t put a price tag on, is integrity.

Preserve your integrity at all costs.

“If you give someone your word,

you have to realize what that means.

Your word is the most important possession you have.

If I tell someone I will do something or be somewhere,

I will do everything within my power to do it.”

~   Fisher DeBerry

The Man, Not The Words

Your word—whether or not you keep it,

and the frequency with which you can be depended upon to

keep it—becomes who you are in the eyes of other people, and,

just as importantly, it becomes who you are in the eyes of yourself.

Your word is your bond. Your word is your reputation. Your word is your character. Your word is your honor.

“It is not the oath that makes us believe

the man, but the man the oath.”

~  Aeschylus

Be True to Your Word  ~

Keep your promises.  Honor your commitments.  Fulfill your obligations.

Do what you say you are going to do, when you say you are going to do it,

and do it the very best way that you can do it.

Deliver on your words; follow through on your promises.  Be faithful to your responsibilities, and do whatever it is you say you are going to do.

Always stay true to your word.

Once you give your word, do all that you possibly can to keep it.

Keep to your word as if your integrity depended on it.

Because ultimately…

It does.

Always keep your word.

Always keep your integrity.

A REAL man always keeps his word. Always.
